Good first half of the month

The beginning of June saw the completion of many projects I had in the works for a while as well as the discovery of a new market or two :)

I managed to submit something to Harvest Hill a project I had in the works since early April. In the end I tossed that original idea and started again three days before the deadline, ending up with a story much more suited for the antho.

I sent a story to the Return to Luna contest. Eric T. Reynolds always manages to come up with interesting anthology ideas and he is also the first editor to publish one of my stories in print (in the Desolate Places anthology) so he has a warm spot in my heart even if this project is going to end up in a rejection (I feel I don’t know enough astronomy to be able to write a really good Moon story)

I also managed to complete three 3!!! flash pieces for the Northern Haunts antho I really want to get in although I’m afraid my pieces are too clishe. In my defense I had two really original ideas that turned out to be too long and will probably become short stories.

Finally I discovered a few interesting markets that will be my next target:

Rage of the Behemoth, sounds like a very interesting Swords and Sorcery anthology and I have never written anything in that style before. It should be a nice break from all the horror I’ve been writing recently. (I notice horror uses you up, not only do you need good characters and a well developed plot but you also need a great idea that will creep people out)

I am also decided to enter The Writers of the Future contest. I mean why not? I’m unpublished and I have a few good ideas, might as well see how I stand next to the good new comers.

Speaking of contests I received the results from the Parasec contest the other day and my story made it in the finals (one of the 12 to do so out of 89) Unfortunately they disliked the plot line as not resolving anything, which is true…so off to find a new market for this one.

Also among interesting markets is the Black Garden antho, although I doubt I will manage to get anything in before it fills up.

Finally, I decided to start my own novel/longer work. I want it to be similar in style to Douglas Adam’s Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy but focused on more modern issues in a Terry Pratchett style…if that makes any sense. Basically I want a funny SF story with political implications. We’ll see how it goes :P

Pretty good for 12 days into June, eh?

  • You’re doing fabulous. I’m desperate to get back into a long project but keep getting waylaid by shorts.

  • Longer projects are so hard to keep focused on, especially when there are so many smaller projects that you could be doing :P
I’ll try really hard to write something over 10k words and not get bored with it…really hard.
